Bouchard Pere et Fils Savigny-Les-Beaune 2007

If this is good Pinot Noir, then I don't understand people who go nuts for this variety.

This wine regularly goes for £15.99. I haven't bought wine by the case for a few months and sort of felt like splashing out on something - nothing crazy but just a nice wine to have with our dinner. I decided on this Burgundy which is featured in Waitrose's French Wine Showcase.

It's perfectly drinkable, but just nothing at all special. It has a sort of mouth-puckering acidity (almost tart/sour), but no pronounced fruit flavours or anything outstanding at all. Why does this cost £16?

  1. Hi Tim....something you find in French Burgundy in it's youth...tart & sour...leave it a few years.
Now...before you lose faith in Pinot Noir...there are a few hundred goodies at very reasonable prices in my area. It would mean you flying here...but for the sake of the good name of Pinot...or Spätburgunder...

  2. I was at an M&S press tasting this morning, and all of their mid-to-high end Pinots were excellent, including a Savigny-les-Beaune 2007. I think this is just a poor wine.

  3. The 2008 variant of this same wine is absolutely sumptuous - and it's ready for drinking now. Maybe you had a corked bottle.
