Roc de Lussac, Lussac-St. Emilion 2007

This wine is frequently on offer at Sainsbury's for half price.  This time it's on for £5.99, marked down from £11.99.  This is a right-bank Bordeaux from the appellation Lussac-Saint Emilion, just a few kilometers northeast of St. Emilion.

I find that with these offers, the wine is usually worth the marked down price and I wouldn't be caught dead paying full price, and that is the case here.  An argument could be made that I'm just used to these offers, but then I could argue back that a lot of wine is overpriced, so either way I win.  I'd say this one is OK for £6.  It has a decent nose - a bit of cherry fruit, perhaps a bit of greenness, and the palate reflects this with a hint of fruit and some chalky tannins.

If you're a French wine lover and like the perception of getting a deal, go for it: it'll do OK with your sirloin steak.  If you're looking for something special, give it a miss.

  1. Hint of aniseed, long finish and more complex than expected.

  2. Agreed - well worth £5 or £6. I see it's on offer at about £4 in Sainsburys Calais, just 500 miles too far for me...

  3. It's shocking how cheap some of these French wines are in France - it's always worth Googling them just to see what they are really worth...

  4. like others have said, it's a good everyday/mid week drinker. But only buy on offer. it's better than many others at £6

  5. OK, the 2008 is not good. I'd rate it a 2. It has the hint of something classy, but that's it. It does improve with breathing though. At half price it is not good value. At £13, which I think is the 'full' price, it's a shocker.

Hi.....I agree that this is not a "great " wine ,but it is a good one. I live half the year in France and I can assure you that I pay around this price over there for some very mediocre stuff and this is above mediocre.I would happily pay a tenner for it so at £7 I am very happy indeed. It is a good antidote for the the very intense alcohol dominant Chilean and Ozzy blockbusters which I can only take so much of.I spent the entire summer of 2009 just west of Bordeaux and it was glorious so no wonder the good vintage.

Sorry I meant to say East of Bordeaux.....I blame the wine for the lack of direction !!!

  8. Just drank the 2009. While I have had better wines those wines were twice the price of this one. Good nose, much more complex than the 2008 has been described. Also much more delicious. Had it with a Sirloin steak (fried in garlic and butter with a little bit of the wine over it too) and it was well worth the £10 the meal came to. 2009 was a beautiful vintage for this wine.

    1. It,s now 2012 and the 2010 is on offer at half price at the convenience Sainsburys; £7.99. These stores are not brilliant at stock rotation! I got 1 x 2006, 3 x 2007 and 2 x 2010 (6 bootles = 5% discount!)They do stand a little breathing time. I'm happy at this price.
