Prestige de Calvet Bordeaux 2008

Here we have Sainsbury's latest offering in the supermarket half-price Bordeaux arena. Why do I do this to myself? The answer is - for every few crap wines in this price/offer category you will unearth a genuine bargain, but you have to try them, or at least I do, because I don't get free wine sent in the post for me to try (yet).

This wine isn't really all that bad. Yes, it's thin and has very little nose. On the palate it has a pronounced capsicum character, something not unknown to Cabernet (Sauvignon and Franc). It's relatively smooth and inoffensive, but for Pete's sake - £9.99? I didn't pay that obviously, but still...I don't know why I'm surprised, we see this time and time again, we know that it's never worth the full price, and usually not worth the sale price.

Hopefully I've tried this so you don't have to. Again, it's not terrible. If it were £3 or £4 I'd say it was worth the money.

  1. Couldn't agree more on this one!

I've been wanting to get into wine for a while and was in Sainsburys when I saw it on special and thought as it normally costs £9.99 - it should be quite good.

However, like you said in your review, I was geniunely surprised at how bland it was. Definetly not worth £9.99 or the £4.99 I paid for it. Wont be buying this one again

  2. Hi Anon,

It's good to keep in mind that this is the case with most of these half-price deals - never worth the full price. However it never hurts to try them (especially if they are only a few quid), and you may find some you like. Bordeaux is usually tricky - it's hard to find decent Bordeaux for £5.

  5. Bought it for £12 from Morrison and it i a rip off at that price .This wine has very little body and very little finish . minimum fruit and little nose . ( Research! research !!!is the key when buying wines lesson i learnt today )
I think i will be more organised with my wine buying and buy from Leithwines or great western wines .

  8. Just opened my first bottle......yes it's certainly a little thin, but at 12% It's nothing less than I would have expected, very drinkable if your looking for a light red

  9. I recently tried the white " Bordeaux 2008" given to me by a freind ! This was poor in every way, especially when I got to the bottom and found a thick slimy sugary substance !! I could have been sick
