This wine made an appearance at Sainsbury's holiday half-price bonanza. It's actually a pretty good wine, closer to a Kiwi-style Sauvignon Blanc than say a Loire Valley one. Very intense nose and flavour, I wouldn't have guessed it's a Bordeaux.
I'm a bit of a fan of white Bordeaux, probably partly because it's overshadowed by its red big brother. It also offers (sometimes) good value on dry Sauvignon/Semillion blends (ever wondered where the Aussies got the idea for that blend?). If you're tired of the in your face New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs, you should be able to get some good wines from Bordeaux for under a tenner.

Just had a Bordeaux Sauvignon blanc 2008 RSV it's at 5.99£ at the moment sainsbury's deal. Lush! It's really like you said, not in your face new Zeland gooseberry but crispier without any of those poor after-alcoholic post tastes. Really good deal on really good wine.
ReplyDeleteHi Anon,
ReplyDeleteI noticed it was on offer as well, but I'm a little Sauvignon Blanc-ed out, so haven't tried the 2008. Glad you agree though - it's a decent wine for sure!
Tim
How long do you think I could keep this wine? Any guide as to how to know which wines can be stored and which ones can't be stored.
ReplyDeleteThanks
curtains curtains,
ReplyDeleteSome generalizations:
- sauvignon blanc such as this one is usually meant to be drunk right away. Perhaps barrel-fermented examples can age a bit, but these are rare and expensive
- whites that can be ageworthy include chardonnay, chenin blanc, semillion and well-made examples of aromatic varieties such as riesling, gewurtztraminer and pinot gris.
- the more well made the wine is (and probably more expensive) the more likely it is to age well
The 2009 is at half price now - had one last night. Agreed - decent wine and a solid 3.
ReplyDeleteMarc,
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear - I just bought 2 bottles of the 2009 last night (I passed on the reds though)...
Argh - I bought the Roc St Emilion red too as I hadn't seen your review. It's a later year though so may be better than your 2.5. Or maybe not...
ReplyDeleteMarc,
ReplyDeleteThe red isn't that bad really (from what I remember), and 2008 I think was better than 2007 in terms of vintage quality. let me know how it is - if I knew it was any good I'd buy some as well.
Relating back to age of wine, what price range of wines would you say fall in the category of 'good expensive wine'?
ReplyDeleteAs an amateur I buy my wine based on price, and I tend to assume that anything above £10 a bottle is GREAT. Would you say I am totally wrong?
Thanks
i just drank a couple of glasses of the Roc Saint Vincent pleasantly surprised for under a fiver will be buying again
ReplyDeleteJust tried the 2011 as this has been a favourite. To my mouth very inferior - either a Chardonnay taste or maybe that Germanic anti-freeze sort of sweetness. I'll try again nxt year.
ReplyDeletejust curious if anyone has tried the 2011 recently? we popped open a bottle tonight and found it underwhelming. easy enough to drink and unoffensive, but otherwise not much to it. interested in what others think!
