Baroncini San Colombano Chianti Riserva 2006

I snuck a bottle of this Chianti into a recent Waitrose order. I hadn't tried it before, and it looked like a good deal (40% off). We like to have Italian wine around the house to have at mealtimes, and if we liked this I would plan to buy more.

I found it disappointing however. I felt it lacked fruit and overall depth. The lack of fruit could be a style thing - Chianti isn't always fruit-forward wine, far from it. Perhaps I just prefer mine to have that pronounced cherry flavour that I love in Italian wines. The lack of complexity and depth however is more of a concern - if you are paying up to £10 for a wine (as you would at full price) you expect a bit more.

  1. Have you tried the 2007 San Colombano Chianti Riserva? I'd like to know what you say about that. I found it quite astonishingly good!
