Unfortunately it doesn't really measure up to the Syrah, although I wonder if it's just too old. It's a 2007, and I think Sauvignon Blanc is one of those wines best drunk young. It still has zippy acidity, but not much fruit. It has some varietal tomato-leaf character, and is thankfully devoid of that foul lingering rotten vegetable taste that some Chilean Sauvignon Blancs have.
I wouldn't buy it again. However, if a newer vintage came along at the same price I would try it, but that's now just running on the currency of the excellent Syrah.
Maycas del Limari Sauvignon Blanc 2007
Limari Valley, Chile
Sainsbury's
£6.74 (£8.99)
2.5/5
Worth a try on the back of the syrah. Not awful by any means but certainly disappoints high expectations.
ReplyDeleteI think you've stumbled on a supermarket wine rule that I often trip over: another wine in the same brand can only be worse (as you wouldn't buy it unless the first was OK).
ReplyDeleteStill, you can always buy two at once and then it's 50:50 good:bad or probably 0:100. I've just come back from Tesco Express with Ogio Primitivo red and white. Also a Barberana rioja reserva 2005 that ought to be OK, and a Chablis (Claude Dominique) – all these are on a £4.95 or £5 half-price spring offer.
Also last night came back from Orly Airport with a Chateau Thomas St Emilion and a Loire white (Antonin Rodet - Bourgogne Aligoté). These were about 11 euros each.
So the only question is: which one tonight?
Arrgh, not Loire of course but Burgandy... so it's head to head with the Chablis.
ReplyDeleteHi Marc,
ReplyDeleteAll the supermarkets have good deals at the moment - I could easily order a few cases of stuff from both Tesco and Waitrose. I was in Waitrose tonight and had to exercise serious self-restraint (if you call 4 bottles self-restraint that is).
Aligoté is a not-so-popular white grape from Burgundy - I've only had this one: http://timswineblog.blogspot.com/2009/01/blason-de-bourgogne-aligote-2007.html
I'd be interested to know what you think of yours.
